Inflation is at its peak, such an increase in prices has not been measured in Hungary for 27 years

In January of this year, consumer prices exceeded a year earlier by an average of 25.7 percent, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) announced on Friday.

Over the past year, household energy and food prices have risen the most.

Consumer prices increased by an average of 2.3 percent in one month.

In twelve months, compared to January 2022, the price of food increased by 44.0 percent, including mainly bread (80.6 percent), eggs (79.4 percent), butter and buttercream (76.6 percent), cheese (76.1 percent), dairy products (75.8 percent), confectionery flour (73.8 percent), dry pasta (66.4 percent), margarine (57.9 percent), pastries (56, 3 percent), poultry meat (48.3 percent) and milk (48.2 percent) rose in price. Within the product group, the price of cooking oil decreased by 6.4 percent and the price of flour by 0.9 percent.

Household energy rose in price by 52.4 percent in one year. Within this, the price of piped gas increased by 88.6 percent, firewood by 58.6 percent, bottled gas by 50.6 percent, and electricity by 27.7 percent.

24.2 percent more for cars, 20.6 percent more for kitchen and other furniture, as well as heating and cooking equipment, and 19.9 percent more for room furniture than a year ago.

Alcoholic beverages and tobacco products rose in price by an average of 15.5 percent, of which alcoholic beverages by 25.2 percent. The price of pet food increased by 49.0 percent, detergents by 33.9 percent, home improvement, and maintenance items by 29.7 percent, and personal care items by 29.0 percent.

Vehicle fuels rose in price by 35.9 percent compared to last January. Fees for services increased by 11.3 percent, including taxis by 32.6, highway tolls, car rental, and parking by 27.1, sports and museum tickets by 25.2, vehicle repair and maintenance by 24.2, home repairs and – maintenance costs by 23.1% more, domestic holidays 22.0% more.

In one month, compared to December 2022, consumer prices increased by an average of 2.3 percent. Food prices rose by 2.4 percent, within which the price of all product categories rose, except for eggs (minus 0.4 percent). Seasonal foods (potatoes, fresh vegetables, fresh domestic and southern fruit) 5.6, chocolate, cocoa 4.7, coffee 4.3, margarine 3.7, Parisian sausage 3.5, pastries 2, 9, poultry meat 2.8 percent, bread 2.7 percent more.

The household energy price decreased by 2.0 percent compared to December, within which you had to pay 4.7 percent less for piped gas. Vehicle fuels rose in price by 8.2 percent. Dishes and kitchen equipment went up by 3.6 percent, pet food by 2.8 percent, and sports equipment and toys by 2.4 percent.

The price of services increased by an average of 2.4 percent, including tolls, car rental, and parking – due to the increase in tolls – 17.3, TV subscriptions by 10.0, postal services by 4.9, health services by 3.9, vehicle repair and maintenance went up by 3.7 percent, telephone and internet by 3.0 percent compared to the previous month.
