Alexianne Castel won the second gold medal for France on the second day of the 2012 LEN European Swimming Championships in Debrecen.
The 21-year-old short course World Champion clocked 2:08.41 minutes in the women’s 200m backstroke. Three hundredths of a second decided silver, bronze, and fourth place: German Jenny Mensing was the luckiest of the three in 2:09.55min ahead of Spain’s Duane da Rocha (2:09.56) and Ukraine’s Daryna Zevina (2:09.57).
Italian Fabio Scozzoli collected his fourth individual European title in the men’s 100m breaststroke (1:00.55min) and dedicated his gold medal to his predecessor Alexander Dale Oen (Norway) who died of cardiac arrest three weeks ago. Aristeidis Grigoriadis achieved Greece’s second European title ever in the men’s 100m backstroke (53.86). The 2005 World Champion also won the first European gold medal four years ago in Eindhoven in the 50m back. Triin Aljand was the proud silver medallist in the women’s 50m butterfly (25.92sec) winning the first ever European long course medal for Estonia.
Upon the victory ceremony of the 100m breaststroke, Dr. Jeno Kamuti, President of the International Fair Play Committee, in the company of Nory Kruchten, President of LEN, handed over the International Fair Play Award to Mr. Per Rune Eknes, President of the Norwegian Swimming Federation. It is a recognition for the entire national team for being present and competing with their hearts and souls to honour the memory of their team mate and friend, Alexander Dale Oen, who passed away tragically some weeks ago.
